In fact, most of the modern economy would be very easy to transfer to public ownership (technically, not politically). Corporations are owned by faceless conglomerates of stockholders. Governments could buy out the stock of these corporations and set up publicly-owned sovereign wealth funds that put the profit of these organisations back into society rather than into the pockets of investors.
