Is Japan afraid of China's revival?

答主:Michael Ji Fe, Studied at Royal Institute of Technology (KTH)

Absolutely, I been to Japan, knows quite some, and on a personal basis I like Japanese, Japanese are polite, at least on surface, homogeneous, are very keen in details, they generally don't like to take charge of doing things, or take responsibilities when things goes wrong in, they don't want to be seen as trouble by the mainstream, but if there is a Yang then there is always a Ying, the darkside is that Japan doesn't wanna recognize it's past wrong, especially during WW2, it's low esteem when things goes wrong and super confidence without regard to other when things are going well.

This make Japans relationship with it's neighbors like Koreas and China hard to reconcile.

Although most Japanese will deny that they are frightened by China and it's rapid development, but if you know them well enough, at least some will admit that they are afraid that China will extract a way of revenge vs Japan because of it's past aggression vs China when China was weak, split and in civilwar, and it's refusal to adhere to a formal reconciliation which includes formal apology to the countries it ravaged, the overall anxiety level in Japan have increased greatly the past 20 years, anyone claiming it's not are simply not been truthful.

Is Japan afraid of China's revival?

答主:Pher Kimhuat

Not only need to be afraid or fearful of China’s revival, Japan should also be guilty conscious to admit killing some 14 million Chinese and up to 100 million became refugees during the eight years of the conflict with Japan from 1937 to 1945 based on reliable historical record written by Rana Mitter who is a professor of Chinese history and politics at the University of Oxford.

However, unlike the German who gentlemanly admit and sincerely apologised what they had done absolutely wrong, Japanese leaders and politicians seem not to be remorseful at all about their cruel and merciless past and instead of gentlemanly admit their horrible massacre in China, they cowardly and heartlessly prioritise themselves to regularly give offerings to those Japanese WWII war criminals at Yasukuni shrine and rewrite Japan’s history books to erase or cover up their horrendous, heinous and dreadful past without giving any due consideration nor feeling to the families of WWI victims in China, Korea and S. E. Asia.

Japan leaders and politicians only kowtow to those who are more arrogant and aggressive than them like the US dropping two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to tame them for Japan to become one of the most faithful lapdog of the US in Asia. Japanese often look down on own Asian as modesty and kindness don’t seem to mingle with cruel and merciless people for them to even take advantage of kindness.

Excellent comment. As someone who has lived and worked over 10 years each in China and Japan - and who speaks both languages - I think you re absolutely right. And there is a solution to Japan’s concern, although it might be a bit late - and that is to admit wrongdoing. Germany has done so, and moved past.

Patrick Chong

Japan will never be able to do that. Recall how Japan aligned with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy in WW2. They deemed themselves as a superior race. No self-respecting racist will ever bring themselves to repent much less apologize!

Peter Wang

All abstract ideas will breakdown when you begin to starve. When China gets strong enough Japan will simply end the Yakasuni Shrine stuff, and hopefully that will be enough for us, no need for a revenge war.

Patrick Chong

It may be abstract to you but to the Japanese, they willingly die for such just as it did in WW2 when their pilots will dive in a suicidal attempt to annihilate their enemy for their emperor and country. One should not underestimate the power of ideas whether abstract or real.

I think you are right. For Japan to be able to do that, Japan will first have to get rid of their “Monarchy” (just like Germany - because Japan started WW-2 on command of Japanese’s Emperor) and stop paying tributes to that shrine of theirs which housed the tombs of Japanese Emperors as well as their WW-2 criminals, otherwise there is no way Japan Gov and Japanese can face up and own up to their crimes committed in World-War-2.

CK Lam

Probably. The main reason behind this is that Japanese government is run by LDP and its members are the son and grandson of those war criminals.

Pher Kimhuat

Exactly, the worst is for Japanese leaders to regularly send offerings to Yasukuni shrine for the WWII war criminals and rewrite or distort history on their cruel and merciless past for the younger Japanese generation to either claim ignorant or some even claim that their then Japanese Imperial army were heroes that arouse more anger from the Chinese and Koreans unlike young German who admit their mistake and say that this will not happen again.

tribute n. 贡品

own up v.

They cannot, and is too late. The Japanese society is still pretty much controlled by the families of warlords who still fancy the “glories” of their ancestors, and also by the you-know-who who will not tolerate a united east Asia. All Japan prime ministers who tried to lose the tension were either stepped down due to corruption or suicided.

Diiiiilireebaa

Yes, even though i hated the Germans for the wrongdoings in the past. But that’s the past. Kudos to the Germans for admitting their war crimes, even though it is mostly Hitler’s doings. Japan however do not have the balls to even sincerely apologise and admit to so many war crimes that have committed, not only to China, to Korea and many south east asian country as well. They have never one officially and sincerely apologised.

Fuji Liao

Japan superficial admitted its wrongdoings, but the factionalism within its political structure “encourages” its lawmakers, PM to pay homage to Yasukuni shrine, for it’ll be a courageous act and its promises of keeping your job or a “promotion”. Japan should enact law, punishable like Germany, anything of the Japan imperial past, including banning the Imperial Navy flag that still flying all over. Best of all, to rid the imperial household
