A Chinese woman who was the victim of an unsolved poisoning case in 1994 has died, aged 50.

Zhu Ling was a chemistry student at Beijing's Tsinghua University when she was poisoned with the highly toxic chemical thallium.

It left her paralysed, almost blind and with brain damage, and she required 24-hour care from her parents.

No-one has been charged in the case. Her classmate and roommate, Sun Wei, was investigated but not charged.

Ms Sun was investigated by police in 1997 but was cleared as a suspect due to a lack of evidence.

She has repeatedly taken to social media to declare her innocence, and also changed her name.

In late 1994, Zhu Ling began experiencing stomach pains and hair loss and she fell into a coma months later.

Doctors later diagnosed her with thallium poisoning, a soft metal which dissolves in water and is odourless and tasteless.

Reports have claimed Ms Sun had access to the thallium compound but she has said she was not the only student with access to the toxic substance.

Zhu Ling's family and supporters have suggested a possible motive was that Ms Sun was envious of her beauty and her musical and academic achievements.

Ms Sun has denied personal animosity between herself and Ms Zhu.

A 2013 petition demanded the US investigate Ms Sun and have her deported from the United States, where she was living.

The petition described Ms Sun's family as having powerful political connections, and it was alleged she "had the motive, and access to the deadly chemical".

The White House responded to the petition and said it declined to comment on the request, but said Zhu Ling's poisoning "was a tragedy".

It read: "No young person deserves to suffer as she has, and we can understand the heartbreak of those close to her."

A central problem, economists say, is that China isn’t creating enough of the high-wage, high-skill jobs that are sought after by its expanding base of educated young people, many of whom have loftier expectations than previous generations.

Rather than trade down for lower-wage jobs, many young people are opting to wait for more opportunities, even though such opportunities might not be available.

“China’s high youth unemployment rate is not transitory but structural,” said David Wang, chief China economist at Credit Suisse. “There is a mismatch in the skills the youth are trained to provide and the skills that existing jobs require.”

Chinese officials are trying several tactics to address the problem, including mandating that state-owned companies hire more graduates, while also prodding more young people to take up blue-collar work or move to the countryside.

Many young people, however, are uninterested in blue-collar jobs. And opportunities at state-owned enterprises remain in short supply, despite the government’s prodding.

Sun Yuexing, who is about to graduate from Beijing Foreign Studies University in less than two months, spent hours handing out résumés at a recent job fair in Beijing. She said she had lowered her salary expectations, but landed no offer yet.

“It’s sad to realize that I will be unemployed upon graduation,” said the 24-year old English major. “The competition is so fierce.”

fierce adj.「猛烈的,激烈的」= cut-throat

越来越多的受过教育的年轻人:expanding base of educated young people
投简历:hand out résumés

It is not clear exactly why the uptick occurred. One cause may be the increasingly contradictory expectations forced on women. Despite excelling in South Korea’s hyper-competitive education system, they face discrimination in the office and the presumption that they ought to be raising children rather than working. At home they are burdened with the bulk of domestic labour and child-rearing. Yet as single-wage households become rarer, they are increasingly expected to bring home the bacon as well. It does not help that many are subject to sexist beauty standards, misogyny, sexual abuse and a culture that indulges abhorrent practices, such as spycam porn. The prominence of South Korea’s #MeToo movement, which kicked off shortly before the uptick, has raised awareness of many of these problems—but not fixed them. And young women are also more likely to be in precarious work, meaning they suffered disproportionately when the pandemic hit.

Drug Traffickers Use Banana Industry in Ecuador for Shipping

2023-09-11 22:30:22

Ecuador is increasingly at the meeting point of two worldwide trades: bananas and cocaine. The South American country is the world's largest exporter of bananas with about 6.5 million metric tons a year. Its neighbors, Peru and Colombia, are the world's largest cocaine producers.

Drug traffickers find containers filled with bananas the perfect vehicle to smuggle their product.Drug trafficking has since brought extreme violence across this once-peaceful nation. Shootings, murders, kidnappings and extortions have become part of daily life. That is especially true in the Pacific port city and banana-shipping center of Guayaquil.

The country was shocked when Fernando Villavicencio, a presidential candidate known for his tough position on organized crime, was shot to death on August 9. He had accused the Ecuadorian Los Choneros criminal group and its imprisoned leader of threatening him and his campaign team days before the killing.

In addition to being close to cocaine production, drug smugglers from Mexico, Colombia and the Balkans in Europe have also set up operations in Ecuador. That is because the country uses the U.S. dollar; its laws and institutions are weak; and criminal groups like Los Choneros are ready to work.

A record 2,304 metric tons of cocaine was produced in 2021 around the world, mostly in Colombia, Peru and Bolivia. That year, nearly a third of the cocaine seized by officials in Western and Central Europe came from Ecuador, two times the amount reported in 2018, found a United Nations report.

Large drug seizures have become more common within the past month. European officials have made record-setting seizures after inspecting containers carrying bananas from Ecuador.Officials on August 25 announced Spain's biggest cocaine seizure yet: 9.5 metric tons hidden among boxes of bananas from Ecuador in a refrigerated container.

Dutch officials also made their country's largest-ever cocaine seizure last month — nearly 8 metric tons — in a container of Ecuadorian bananas. Officials in Greece and Italy also announced seizures of cocaine hidden in Ecuadorian bananas this year.

Knowingly or not, banana growers, exporters, shipping companies, port operators, private security companies, customs agents, agriculture officials, police, and buyers can be used by drug traffickers. Some traffickers have created false companies to look like real banana exporters. Others have taken control of legal businesses, including plantations.

They have found companies willing to cooperate in trafficking. They have also paid off, threatened or kidnapped truck drivers and other workers to help get cocaine into shipments.Violent deaths in Ecuador have doubled from 2021 to 2022, when 4,600 died, the most ever recorded in a year.

The country is likely to break the yearly record again, with 3,568 violent deaths recorded in the first half of 2023. In Guayaquil, people live in fear.No more than 30 percent of containers are currently inspected at Ecuadorian ports. President Guillermo Lasso's government says it wants to use scanners on entire containers.

Twelve of those machines were supposed to be operating already but that has not happened yet, said National Police General Pablo Ramírez. He is Ecuador's national director of anti-drug investigations.Jose Hidalgo is director of the Association of Banana Exporters of Ecuador. He said the industry is more vulnerable to trafficking than other export products because of the number of containers that it uses.

He explained that exporters spend about $100 million yearly on security measures. That includes surveillance cameras at plantations, GPS monitoring of trucks, and the identification of land routes that require police patrols to keep criminals away.Still, some exporters have been accused of being involved in trafficking cocaine.

The organization behind the cocaine seizure in Spain operated through a banana exporting company in Machala, a city south of Guayaquil. After this story was published in The Associated Press, agriculture and customs officials in Ecuador announced in a statement that they had removed a government-run banana export database.

It removed information on export companies considered to be false or incomplete. It also canceled permits of plantations covering 16,000 hectares found to be nonexistent. Difficult words: - monitor — v. a device that is used for showing, watching, or listening to something

You Shouldn't Sit for More Than 4 Hours per Day, According to Chiropractor

According to a nationwide survey, the average person spends 9.5 hours sitting down, which is more than double the amount recommended by a chiropractor. This was prior to the epidemic and remote work.Obesity, cardiovascular difficulties, and type 2 diabetes are the major medical problems associated with excessive sedentary behavior. When people spend too much time on their behind, they might develop muscle weakness, back and neck pain, bad posture, and bone health problems. To avoid musculoskeletal problems related with sitting, chiropractor Tom Oddo recommended that everyone with a knowledge job spend time both sitting and standing during their workday. He recommends that individuals move around and stretch their legs every 60 to 90 minutes, and that they incorporate more standing into their day.Standing helps relieve stress, and if people work eight to nine hours a day, they should preferably spend half of their shift on their feet. Working from home, on the other hand, is a double-edged sword in that it diminishes total activity and the desire for people to get up and move.

part2

Rolling Stones Announce First New Album in 18 Years

2023-09-08 22:30:17

The Rolling Stones said this week that their first new collection of songs in almost 20 years comes out on October 20.The album will be called Hackney Diamonds. The name comes from broken glass often seen on the streets of east London's Hackney area.Three of the band's original members - Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood – came to the Hackney Empire, a historic theater, for the announcement.

The Rolling Stones are still traveling the world and performing concerts, but they have not made an album since 2016. That recording did not include new material.Richards, 79, said the band only made a new album because Jagger wanted to sing. So they went to record new songs after almost 20 years.“When you have a singer that wants to sing,” Richards said, “you grab him and throw him in the studio.”

Richards said the songs came together with “energy and urgency.”Jagger, who is 80, said, “we are quite pleased,” with the new album. He said the group would not have put a recording together if “we hadn't really liked it. We said we had to make a record we really love ourselves … we hope you all like it.”They released the first song, called Angry, this week.

But Jagger said the rest of the songs are not angry. He said the album contains “love songs, ballads, country…” sounds. The new recording includes songs with Paul McCartney, Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder and Charlie Watts, the Rolling Stones drummer who died in 2021. Watts recorded sounds for two songs in 2019.

Steve Jordan is the drummer for the other 10.“Of course, he's missed incredibly,” Richards said about Watts. But he added that Jordan was Watts' suggestion for a replacement.Jagger said the addition of Lady Gaga to the album was unplanned. The Stones were recording at a studio in Los Angeles and Lady Gaga just happened to be in the studio next door. So, she recorded the song Sweet Sound of Heaven with the band.“She walked in next to me and we started singing together,” Jagger said.

Wood said McCartney of the Beatles played the bass guitar on one track. “You know, he was loving it.” McCartney's band was perhaps the Rolling Stones' biggest rival in the 1960s.Taric Fioravanti was one of the fans who lined up outside hoping to see the band arrive. He is from Brazil. “I love these guys,” he said. “They're 80 years old. Most bands have stopped making music by that age,” he added. The Rolling Stones started in 1962.

They celebrated their 60th year with a tour of Europe in 2022 and they said they have plans to visit North America in 2024.Wood, 76, plays guitar. He said the idea of retirement is “Impossible. You've got to keep playing,” he added.

Prince Harry became emotional during his eight-hour testimony in his lawsuit against a British newspaper publisher. He expressed concern that his claims of phone hacking would be dismissed, saying it would feel like an "injustice."The duke accused Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN) of phone hacking and other illicit methods between 1996 and 2009. During cross-examination, Harry clashed with MGN's lawyer and asserted that phone hacking was widespread. Scientists have discovered a new species of early ornithopod dinosaur called Iani smithi in Utah, dating back to around 100 million years ago. The fossils provide insights into life during the middle of the Cretaceous Period and shed light on how some dinosaur lineages persisted despite changing climates.Iani smithi is a relative of rhabdodontomorphs, a type of ornithopod previously known mostly from European fossils. The well-preserved fossils, including a skull and limb bones, provide valuable information about a time in North America from which little is known about the continent's dinosaurs. This discovery helps researchers better understand how ornithopods evolved and adapted during the late Cretaceous and provides insights into navigating a changing climate.
